George Roberts Hall
George Roberts Hall opened in time for the first semester 2002, and was named after George Vivian Roberts, CBE, a fifth generation Townsville solicitor. Mr Roberts has not only been generous with his time in support of the University, he was actively involved in the push for a University in North Queensland, and contributes to a Bursary offered to a resident once a year.
- George Roberts Hall offers an ideal environment for study within easy walking distance of the main campus
Although our Hall is within easy walking distance of the main campus, being physically removed from the central activities of the campus does mean that this Hall offers a quieter environment for study. George Roberts Hall is situated on the western boundary of the University, next to Western Hall, and close to the Schools of Humanities, Education and Tourism and the University swimming pool.
The complex consists of eight blocks of two or three stories each containing three or four bedroom units, with common lounge, bathroom and kitchenette. Two units on the ground floor are purpose-designed for disabled residents.
Each air-conditioned study-bedroom is furnished with a bed, mattress and protector, pillow, coverlet, desk, bookshelf, chair, cupboard, chest of drawers, wall fan, phone and internet access.
The lounge is air-conditioned and furnished with lounge chairs, coffee table, ironing facilities, and a television with cable and free-to-air reception. Because of the unique design of our Hall, we have policies about the use of communal lounges to ensure the needs of all parties are met.
The kitchenette is equipped with a small refrigerator, microwave and jug for your convenience. Please remember that cooking is not permitted in the lounge areas as it is a fire risk and against local fire regulations.
You will need to provide your own blankets, doonas, towels and sheets, and laundering your own bed linen, towel and personal laundry is your responsibility. For your convenience, we provide coin operated washing machines and dryers in two laundries situated at either end of the complex.
A computer room is available for those residents who do not have their own computers.
Adjacent to the dining hall is a common room which offers a wide-screen TV with surround sound, a DVD and a pool table. Drinks and snacks vending machines are on hand, as are bike racks, storage shed and a barbecue. A volleyball court and a half basketball court complete the facilities for residents.
Our Head of Hall lives in a house adjacent to the accommodation and oversees the well-being of our 250 residents, assisted by the Hall’s twelve Residential Assistants (RAs). These RAs are senior students who have shown leadership qualities during their residence with us and are your first point of contact for Hall events. Whether you need academic support, advice on social events or where to find the nearest shops – or anything else to do with living in Townsville or studying at James Cook University, just ask your RA for advice.
- There will always be someone around for you when you need them.
In addition to the Head and the 12 Residential Assistants, our office is open between 9 am and 4:15 pm, Monday to Friday, to help you with administrative matters and our Hall is serviced by the JCU Halls of Residence maintenance, catering and cleaning divisions. Together, we will provide you with a safe, supportive and pleasant place in which to live and to learn.
Our residents come from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds from within Australia and overseas. We hope that you will choose to become involved in the life of the Hall, to enjoy the opportunity to meet each other at our various activities and to make the most of being part of a community of students with common goals.
In the words of a GRH resident...
"This is my 3rd year of living at George Roberts Halls and it has been an excellent experience. The hall has a friendly and fun atmosphere, new unit-style accommodation with adequate privacy and is a great place to study."
