Welcome from the Committee

ANZAME is the premier association within Australia and New Zealand that acts as a hub for health professional educators to share research, scholarship and best practice. As a nonprofit organization, ANZAME also acts as a forum to debate the educational challenges facing health faculties and innovative solutions for clinical education.

The ANZAME Committee of Management warmly invites you to participate in the 2010 ANZAME Annual Conference.

Welcome to Townsville

Sunny North Queensland and the organising committee welcome all participants to ANZAME10 in tropical Townsville. Hosted by James Cook University, Australia’s University in the Tropics, this year’s conference asks us to further our understandings of health professional education to strive to overcome Barriers and Re(e)form our practice to further enhance health professional education. These themes set the scene for lively discourse and the social program, launched at Reef HQ (the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium) will place us in the right frame of mind. The scientific program is sure to be thought provoking and enjoyable with over 160 concurrent presentations informing themes like the integration of behavioural, biomedical and social sciences, overcoming barriers by teaching students outside of the box and supporting students through critical transitions.

We have a quartet of keynote speakers to start us on the way and guide us through the journey. Professor John Hamilton (Emeritus Professor, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Newcastle) will open the event by taking a timely look at the 1910 Flexner Report and the voyage of Health Education in the intervening 100 years. Associate Professor Lindy McAllister (Deputy Head, Teaching and Learning, School of Medicine, University of Queensland) will share her insights from her experience in Allied Health and Medicine discussing ethical issues in Interprofessional Practice. Professor Barbara Hayes (Emeritus Professor, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Nutrition, James Cook University) asks the question whether Interprofessional Health Practice Teams foster cohesion or competition. Professor Ian Wronski (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences, James Cook University) will wrap up with some reflections and predictions looking towards the future of Health Professional Education and Workforce.

Welcome everyone, let’s Overcome some Barriers and Re(e)form our approach to professional practice and health professional education together. We look forward to seeing you under the tropical sun in July.

Dr Gary Hamlin, John Smithson, Dr Kimberley Owens and Prof Tarun Sen Gupta, Co-Chairs of ANZAME 10 Conference Committee
