Introduction
Welcome to the NAFF (North Australian Freshwater Fish) web site.
In the next few mothts we will try and make this web site a "one stop shop" for information relating to freshwater fishes in Northern Australia.
There are extensive gaps in our knowledge of the freshwater fish fauna and their important habitats across northern Australia (Cape York Peninsula, Gulf of Carpentaria, NT and Kimberley). This area is highly diverse but has been poorly surveyed to date. Many new species and distribution records wait discovery.
This project will bring together varous forms of information on freshwater fishes, both scientific and from traditional owners and knowledge locals, and undertake targeted fieldwork to fill identified knowledge gaps to create a comprehensive synthesis of freshwater fish and fish habitat related management information for northern Australia.
The project links in with biodiversity management targets in NRM plans. Community involvement and communication are important components of this project.
