TENDER

23

Introduction: ÂDoHA â applications to host an Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre. The Department of Health and Ageing is seeking proposals from suitable organisations or institutions with the capacity and expertise to host an Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre. In the 2008-09 Budget the Australian Government announced a commitment of $15 million over five years to establish two dedicated prostate cancer research centres. The Prostate Cancer Research Centres measure forms part of the Governmentâs National Cancer Plan which aims to reduce the burden of cancer by improving the well being and health outcomes of cancer patients their families and carers through funding research early detection treatment and support initiatives.

The objectives of the two research centres will be to develop improved diagnostic and screening tools as well as new treatments for prostate cancer concentrating on:

  • new ways to detect the presence of prostate cancer and reliably differentiate between slow growing and aggressive forms of the diseaseÂ
  • developing new therapies targeting the molecular mechanisms that enable prostate cancers to resist current drug treatment and
  • identifying accurate markers which would help predict treatment response.

The first of the two centres will be located at the Epworth Hospital in Richmond Victoria.

The host and site of the second centre will be determined through this open call for proposals.

Eligibility:ÂÂ Please refer to the website below for further information.

List of current funding opportunities - A complete list of current funding opportunities is available on our website at

http://www.jcu.edu.au/office/research_office/funding/index.html and are available for viewing by either Funding Body or by deadline.

Application Cover Sheets â Signed Application Cover Sheets are required to be submitted with all applications, except expressions of interest.  If your _expression_ of interest is successful and you are invited to submit a full application, then an application cover sheet is required   http://www.jcu.edu.au/office/research_office/ACS.html

JCU subscribes  to the Community of Science (COS) database and encourages all researchers to utilise the benefits of this service by creating a workbench at http://www.cos.com  One of the functions of COS is to provide automatic funding alerts targeted to the information provided by the researchers in their profiles.

Research Office deadlines - Applicants are reminded that the internal closing date for domestic applications is one week prior to the closing date of the funding body for domestic applications; and two weeks prior to the closing date for overseas applications.  This time is required to fully read, ensure compliance with guidelines, provide feedback to applicants, make necessary amendments and ensure applications arrive at their destinations on time.  Applications not handed in within appropriate timeframes cannot be guaranteed the attention they deserve. Supervisors are asked to please ensure that students are aware of the procedures for submission of applications as their applications must be processed through the Research Office.

Direct Notification of Results of Applications - If you are advised directly by a funding body of the outcome of a grant application, please advise the Research Office so we can keep our records up to date.  Quite often the funding body contacts the Chief Investigator directly.  We do need to know if your grant was successful/unsuccessful so that files can be archived, and if it is successful to commence procedures to open new accounts.
