NHMRC News

Funding for 2010

The call for applications for NHMRC funding commencing in 2010 opens on 8 December 2008 for:

·                   Research Fellowships and Practitioner Fellowships (applications close 6 February 2009)

·                   Australia Fellowships (expressions of interest close on 3 March 2009).

·                   Project Grants (applications close on 17 March 2009).

More information will be made available on the NHMRC website on 8 December and will also be advertised in the Research Office Bulletin issued on that date.

NHMRC Postgrads get topped up

NHMRC intends to increase the 50 per cent restriction on top-up funding for Postgraduate Scholarships to bring NHMRC into line with the 75 per cent allowed by the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA).

This increase will apply to all current NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship holders from 1 January 2009 and will only apply from that date forward.

The change will also be reflected in the NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships Policy for the next round that will open in May 2009.

Animals in research

The Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 2004 recognises the contribution that animals make to research and teaching. It also outlines the responsibilities of those involved in the use and care of animals for scientific purposes.

To meet the requirements of the code, research proposals must justify the use of animals and consider using alternatives wherever possible.

NHMRC and its Animal Welfare Committee seek your views on alternatives to using animals for scientific purposes, specifically health and medical research and teaching. To contribute, contact the Health and Research Ethics Section on (02) 6217 9070. Contributions close on 3 December 2008.

Application Cover SheetsSigned Application Cover Sheets are required to be submitted with all applications, except expressions of interest.  If your _expression_ of interest is successful and you are invited to submit a full application, then an application cover sheet is required   http://www.jcu.edu.au/office/research_office/ACS.html

JCU subscribes  to the Community of Science (COS) database and encourages all researchers to utilise the benefits of this service by creating a workbench at http://www.cos.com  One of the functions of COS is to provide automatic funding alerts targeted to the information provided by the researchers in their profiles.

Research Office deadlines - Applicants are reminded that the internal closing date for domestic applications is one week prior to the funding body closing date for domestic applications; and two weeks prior to the funding body closing date for overseas applications.  This time is required to fully read, ensure compliance with guidelines, provide feedback to applicants, make necessary amendments and ensure applications arrive at their destinations on time.  Applications not handed in within appropriate timeframes cannot be guaranteed the attention they deserve.

Direct Notification of Results of Applications - If you are advised directly by a funding body of the outcome of a grant application, please advise the Research Office so we can keep our records up to date.  Quite often the funding body contacts the Chief Investigator directly.  We do need to know if your grant was successful/unsuccessful so that files can be archived, and if it is successful to commence procedures to open new accounts.
