About the Centre for Tropical Agri-tech Research

The Centre for Tropical Agri-tech Research (CTAR) is the key-link between plant biotechnology research, sustainable agricultural practices, and economic and educational expertise within James Cook University and tropical regional agri- and bio-industries.

It identifies specifically with the Tropical Biology and Conservation research focus, but also utilises the expertise of a variety of schools through its diversity of operations.

CTAR offers a broad research and business activity spectrum. Currently five research units report to the Centre:

  • Regional Bio-industries Unit (RBU);

  • Rapid Assessment Unit (RAU);

  • Agroforestry and Novel Crops Unit (ANCU);

  • Molecular Farming Unit (MFU); and the

  • Cairns Analytical Unit (CAU).

The Rapid Assessment Unit within CTAR creates a strong collaborative partnership between James Cook University and the Queensland Government, involving links to regional bio-industries and plant technology research.
