Short biography
Tim has a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of York, UK, Masters degree in Computer Graphics & Visualization, and Bachelors degree (Hons) in Information Technology. Prior to joining JCU he was Assistant Professor (2006-2011) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He also held positions in the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC) and Information Laboratory (InfoLAB) at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA, USA (2003 to 2006), in Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, and as visiting researcher at the HITLab, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.
His research interests include: serious games, games, human-computer-interaction (HCI), interaction design & interactive media. He has worked in various roles (Principle Investigator, HCI lead, etc.) on numerous small to large-scale research projects in Serious Games, Simulations & Experiential Environments funded through several agencies such as NSF US, MDA Singapore & EPSRC UK; including, Principle investigator (PI) on serious games research project (2009-2011) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as part of Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab. He’s been on the organizing & program committees of numerous international conferences (e.g. ACM SIGGRAPH, IEEE Virtual Reality, ICEC...), is currently on the editorial boards of Journal of Entertainment Computing & ACM Computers in Entertainment (CiE) and is Secretary of IFIP Technical Committee TC14 on Entertainment Computing and Chair of TC14 Working Group on Serious Games. He teaches games and HCI, has supervised several Honours degree thesis projects, supervised PhD students and served on PhD thesis and examination committees. Past students of Tim’s have received best paper awards at SIGGRAPH 2008 and CGames 2010, and awards for animation/machinima at Asia’s SHOOOT Fiesta Media Awards.
