Volunteering at ACCRS

Volunteers

You must be over 18 years of age to volunteer at the ACCRS. There are usually no other prerequisites for applicants. However, for particular projects qualifications and/or experience may be required. Places are limited and depend on the present work load and active projects.

Volunteering at the ACCRS may involve tasks such as monitoring flora and fauna populations with relation to climate change, collecting and analyzing phenological data on lowland rainforests, reforestation and forest biomass surveys.

Accommodation is provided for volunteers and there are no fees payable. However, volunteers are responsible for the provision and preparation of their own meals. A communal kitchen is available for use or there are a small number of backpackers and restaurants close by where meals can be purchased.

Volunteers generally work a 7.5 hour day, 5 days a week with weekends free to explore the surrounding areas. There is no public transport in this area, but bicycles can be hired from the Research Station for a small fee. The majority of attractions within Cape Tribulation are in walking distance from the Research Station.

Prospective volunteers should send a short email message with the Volunteer Application Form to the Research Station giving the information suggested below. It is not necessary to send your complete CV unless requested at a later date.

  • Your name and country of residence.

  • The exact days/week(s) that you would be able to volunteer.

  • The reason you would like to volunteer (e.g. biology graduate seeking field experience, always wanted to see the Daintree etc).

  • Any particular field of interest.

  • Any scientific or field work qualifications and experience.

Volunteers should also familiarize themselves with the General Information Package and Safety Briefing Notes before they arrive.
