Qualifications
Professor Bowman began his professional life as a radiographer in the
UK. He holds the Diploma (DCR), a Higher Diploma of the College of Radiographers
(HDCR). He has a MA in Politics and Government, from Guild Hall University
in London and a PhD in Clinical Judgement and Decision Making from the
Open University in the UK. Professor Bowman also has a keen interest in
health professional education and holds a Teachers Diploma of the College
of Radiographers (TDCR) and a Certificate of Further and Adult Education
(FAETC). He has an MBA from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Professor
Bowman has also been involved in the management of outdoor adventure education
and holds qualifications in mountaineering, caving and rock climbing.
Professional history
Professor Bowman worked as a senior radiographer in a number of hospitals
in London before becoming a student teacher at Guys Hospital Radiography
Education Centre. He became a principal lecturer at South Bank University
when the centre at Guys amalgamated with that university. He went on to
become Head of the Department of Radiography and Imaging Sciences at the
University College of St Martin. He was appointed foundation Dean of the
Faculty of Health Science and Community at St Martins before moving to
Australia to take up the position of Head of the School of Medical Radiations
at Charles Sturt University. At Charles Sturt University he later became
the foundation Head of the School of Clinical Sciences, before moving to
the University of South Australia as Dean of the Whyalla Campus and the
foundation Director of Regional Engagement. From here he moved to his present
position at JCU. Professor Bowman has also lectured for the Open University
in the UK and been external examiner and advisor to many universities including
Kings College (London), the University of Derby (UK), Kingston University
(UK) and Monash University (Melbourne).
Areas of research expertise
Professor Bowman’s areas of research expertise include: professional
decision making and judgement (specifically the application of decision
analysis); university/community engagement; role expansion for health professionals;
rural professional health practice; and patient care during medical procedures.
Personal Interests
Professor Bowman is a keen aviator and holds qualifications to fly
light aircraft, ultra lights and gliders. He is also a potter and makes
hand-build
sculpture and wheel thrown forms.
