North Queensland History

Cairns HECS Band 1

26 hours lectures; 13 hours tutorials; 13 hours workshops. Semester 1.

Staff: Dr J Wegner.

The subject will cover major themes in North Queensland history including establishment of a capitalist economy, adaptation by European society and industry to the tropics, race relations and political problems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to advanced research skills in local history; research primary source material in archives and general libraries; use of oral history collecting skills; use of photographs and other material records;
  2. to assist students to acquire skills in the collation and analysis of large amounts of historical data, and the skills necessary to write a substantial historical work;
  3. to provide a structured overview of north Queensland history to assist with interpretation of research into more limited topics in this area.

Assessment by one seminar presentation and essay (20%); research portfolio (20%); major research essay (60%).
