Semester 1. 13 hours optional tutorials available at Cairns campus and videolinked to Townsville campus.

This subject explores the concepts of community development and community capacity building in the context of Indigenous Australian communities. Students will examine the role of community, government and non-government partnerships as Indigenous communities attempt to shift from a ‘welfare based economy’ to a ‘real economy’.

Learning Objectives:

  1. review the history of service provision to Indigenous communities;
  2. examine current government policy and the trend towards community, government and non-government sector partnerships;
  3. develop an understanding of cross-sectoral partnerships theory in the management of Indigenous communities and organisations.

Assessment by participation (20%); journal (30%); a 2,000 word essay (30%); oral presentation (20%).
