Feature Writing

Townsville, Cairns HECS Band 1

33 hours workshops (Townsville campus); 13 hours lectures, 20 hours tutorials (Cairns campus). Semester 2.

Students build upon the reporting and writing skills developed in level 1 as they learn to prepare feature articles of a standard suitable for publication. The subject uses news writing as a base from which to develop higher level skills of research and analysis, including as necessary statistical research, dealing with a diverse range of opinions, anecdotes, other published material and/or the reporter’s own impressions, on the way to creating entertaining and informative feature articles.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to prepare feature articles of a standard suitable for publication;
  2. to develop higher level skills of research and analysis;
  3. to develop an understanding of the responsibilities of the feature writer as an informed social commentator.

Assessment by tutorial participation (10%); regular written assignments (90%).
