Materials and Manufacturing Processes

Townsville HECS Band 2

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, seminars, field trips, practicals and workshops. Semester 2.

Common Engineering Materials: Properties of materials; nature of metal and alloys; equilibrium diagrams and the iron-carbon system; ferrous metals and alloys; nonferrous metals and alloys; heat treatment; non metallic materials: plastics, elastomer, ceramics and composites; materials selection.

Measurement and Quality Assurance: principles of basic measurement and gauging; sources of error; surface roughness measurement; analysis of tolerances.

Manufacturing Processes: casting processes; forming processes; materials removal processes; joining processes; CAD/CAM.

Learning Objectives:

  1. introduce students to the processes for manufacturing common engineering materials, and the properties which result;
  2. common machining and welding techniques and associated measurement methods.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
