Writing for Theatre

Townsville HECS Band 1

26 hours workshops. Semester 1.

This subject provides students with the fundamental skills of playwriting in order to create written material for the stage. Students will participate in a series of writing exercises to ‘free’ the writer’s voice and explore strategies for discovering, building and shaping character. Workshopping written material with actors will be an integral part of the stage writing process.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop skills in narrative construction;
  2. to develop skills in writing dialogue;
  3. to explore strategies for discovering, building and shaping character.

Assessment by seminar participation (20%); minor project (20%); major project (40%); writer’s journal (20%).
