Chargeable Disk Space

Default (free) Disk Space Allocation

Disk space is a limited commodity and thus has to be rationed to ensure equitable treatment of all users. Each user is entitled to a default allocation which will be given without justification. Additional allocation should be requested by filling in the electronic Disk Quota Variation Form. Any increase will be made, on a "space available" basis, up to a pre-determined limit, subject to justification. These allocations are free of charge. Details of default and limit allocations are given below.

Any user wishing an allocation beyond the agreed limit for that class of user will normally be expected to pay for the additional space required. Any decision to waive payment in special cases is at the discretion of the Information Technology and Resources Director after considering all circumstances. The charges are as detailed below and payment will be required at the commencement of the allocation. It may not be possible to provide additional space immediately as there may be none available. In such a case space will be purchased as soon as economically practicable.

Allocations of disk space to users are dependent on a number of factors, including the category of user and the nature of the requirement (temporary or permanent). A permanent requirement is defined as a requirement lasting in excess of 3 months. The maximum free allocation on a temporary basis will be dependent on the amount of unused space available. In general the following limits apply to permanent requirements:

*  Justification for an increased allocation for undergraduates may be made on a group or on an individual basis by a relevant member of academic staff. Individual requests from students will not be acepted.

Addional free allocation Requests for additional free allocations (up to the Limit above) should be made on a Disk Quota Variation Form.

Chargeable Disk Space

To keep administration to a minimum, allocations of disk space above the Limit will be made only for requests over 40MB, and for a maximum of 12 months at any time. There will be a per annum charge of $0.25 per megabyte over default allocation.

Note, however, that Information Technology and Resources is happy to deal with an application for a departmental allocation which is to be re-allocated to a group of users, subject to the costs being met from a single account.

For chargeable disk space, applications can be made with a Disk Quota Variation Form, and the fees must be paid with a posting code. Please submit an online Miscellaneous Supplies Requisition Form with the approved application.
