POTENTIAL RESEARCH PROJECTS WITH
ASSOC PROF RICK SPEARE
The Department of Public Health and Tropical Medicine offers
postgraduate students research projects in several forms; independent project,
MSc by coursework and research,
MSc by research, and PhD. The following are potential projects
that could be used by students interested in parasitology or zoonotic
diseases.
HEAD LICE
- Ultrastructural anatomy of the genitalia of head lice
- Functions of the antennal organs of head lice
- Evaluation of ovicidal compounds
- Resistance of head lice to insecticidal compounds

HOOKWORMS
- Prevalence of hookworms in dogs and cats
- Identification of infective larvae of hookworms of dogs and cats
- Strains of Ancylostoma caninum
SCABIES
- Assessment of acaricides in vitro
- Improving the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis of scabies
- Epidemiology of scabies
- Contol of scabies in closed communities
STRONGYLOIDES
- Taxonomy of Strongyloides from dogs in central Australia
- Diagnosis of strongyloidiasis
- Eradication of Strongyloides stercoralis in communities
PTEROPID LYSSAVIRUS
- Prevalence of antibodies to PLV in flying foxes in north Queensland
- Pathology of CNS disease in flying foxes
MANAGEMENT OF DOGS AND CATS BY LOCAL
GOVERNMENT
- Prevalence and cost of dog bites
- Management of dogs in Aboriginal communities
ZOONOTIC DISEASES OF DOGS AND CATS
