Bachelor of Creative Industries
Offered at JCU Cairns, this innovative four-year course has been developed
in conjunction with Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE, Cairns
Regional Gallery, Kick Arts and Just Us Theatre Ensemble (JUTE). Students
who have already completed the TAFE diploma can complete the degree in
three years. Students select a major in theatre, music, visual arts or
multimedia. The course prepares graduates for a range of careers in the
creative industries – for example curator, arts administration,
gallery director, theatre manager – and combines practical study
in the creative arts with communication and applied business studies and
industry placements.
Bachelor of Environmental Science
Offered at JCU Cairns and JCU Townsville, this three-year course provides
a specialist, qualification for those seeking careers in environmental
science. Three specialisations are available: Natural Resource Management;
Ecology and Conservation; and Environmental Earth Science. With outstanding
facilities, interdisciplinary expertise in environmental sciences and
location alongside two World Heritage sites – the Great Barrier
Reef and the rainforests and coasts of the Wet Tropics region –
JCU’s environmental science graduates are highly valued by leading
agencies and consultancies.
Bachelor of Marine Science
Offered at JCU Townsville; first year only in Cairns. This three-year
course was formerly available under the Bachelor of Science. JCU is world-renowned
for its marine courses and research. Our location alongside the Great
Barrier Reef World Heritage Area provides outstanding practical experience
opportunities for marine science students. Facilities include on-campus
aquaria, laboratories, research vessels and JCU’s own research station
on Orpheus Island. The Tropical Marine Network major is a joint venture
with University of Queensland and University of Sydney, and offers additional
field courses.
Bachelor of Planning
Offered at JCU Townsville and JCU Cairns, this four-year course is accredited
by the Australian Planning Institute. The course combines environmental
impact studies, geography and disaster management with urban planning.
This program provides a strong emphasis on the tropical natural and urban
environments. Graduates are equipped for careers as planners with government
agencies, developers and regional development organisations.
Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science-Bachelor of Education
This joint degree, formerly only available at JCU Townsville, will be
available at JCU Cairns from 2006. The joint degree provides comphrensive
training in the scientific foundations of sport and exercise as well as
the fundamentals of education. With a joint degree in Sport and Exercise
Science and Education, graduates can undertake careers in a variety of
exercise, sport, health and physical activity related professions including
teaching physical education, sports coaching, health and fitness management,
exercise rehabilitation, sport development and health promotion. In addition,
graduates are able to register as a health and physical education teacher,
in either primary or secondary schools, depending on their Bachelor of
Education specialisation.
Bachelor of Tropical Agricultural Science
Offered at JCU Cairns and JCU Townsville, this innovative three-year course
brings together a range of studies including soil science, animal science,
agroforestry and horticulture for a wide range of careers in agriculture,
animal husbandry and scientific research. The course has input from government
agencies including CSIRO, Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries,
Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Bachelor of Veterinary Science
Available in Queensland for the first time outside Brisbane, the Bachelor
of Veterinary Science is a five-year course offered at JCU Townsville.
Clinical placements form a key component of the course, utilising JCU
facilities at Townsville, Atherton Tablelands, Mackay, Cairns and JCU’s
working cattle station Fletcherview, plus farms, veterinary hospitals
and government agencies in the region. The School of Veterinary and Biomedical
Sciences has excellent facilities and research strengths in tropical animal
science and veterinary science.
