Bachelor of Science (Geography)
Geography is the science of place and Geographers study patterns and processes in both the natural and built environment. Geography graduates have the ability to synthesise and integrate information from a variety of sources to provide a clear overview of the interactions between society and environment.
Course highlights
This course has a strong focus on field skills and problem solving and provides students with a broad range of skills in natural resource management and research. Field work includes vegetation surveys, mapping and research into management issues. JCU researchers and students work closely with leading government resource management agencies.
Overview
Geographers help to provide the solutions to many problems that affect society and the planet. JCU geography students study land uses ranging from Aboriginal land management to conservation management and urban development.

Honours
An Honours program is available for students who demonstrate high academic performance. Honours consists of an additional year of study and the development of a personal research project and thesis. An Honours degree is usually essential for entry into a higher research degree.

Career Opportunities
Geographers are ‘big picture’ professionals. They are often employed by government agencies (EPA, DEW, CSIRO) and non- government organizations (Conservation International, WWF, Nature Conservancy) with interests in local and regional planning, disaster planning, population planning, and protected area management. With further study, graduates may pursue careers as researchers, or as teachers in all levels of the education system.
