The aims of this workshop are:
- To provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of research into writing and the creative arts in the Tropics;
- To form a scholarly community for research into writing and the arts in the Tropics within the Cairns Institute in James Cook University;
- To develop relations between the JCU research focus group and other researchers and institutions nationally and internationally;
- To provide a forum for building cooperation, collaboration and consultancies between the JCU scholarly community and relevant individuals, groups, and creative industries in the North Queensland region.
Participants will include:
- Research staff and postgraduates from JCU and other universities presenting papers;
- JCU staff participating but not presenting papers including CI Director, Senior CI research Professors, PVCs of FAESS and FLBCT, HOSs of FAESS and SoCA, other academic staff and postgraduate students;
- Invited representatives of arts and creative industries in Cairns region, including Arts Nexus, Centre of Contemporary Art, Cairns Regional Art Gallery, Just Us Theatre Ensemble, Cairns City Council, Tanks Arts Centre, UMI Arts, and others;
- Members of the general public.

Both Cairns city and the Northern Beaches have many suitable hotels and resorts available for overnight stays, from budget to 4 star. The Sunbus company has a reliable hourly bus service into the campus from both areas (about 5-10 minutes from the Northern Beaches, about 25 minutes from the City.)
