Automaticity and visual search: the development of attention in later development

Jo Wales Seminar*

Date:

Thursday 24 April 2008

Time:

4.00pm – approximately 5.00pm (light refreshments will follow)

Location:

Room NS001, JCU Douglas Campus, Angus Smith Drive, TOWNSVILLE

Video conferenced to: Room A21.002, JCU Cairns Campus, McGregor Road, Smithfield, CAIRNS

Summary:

A series of experiments, using both traditional measures and eye movements, examined the processes by which younger and older adults become proficient at visual search.

The data suggest that with practice, effortful search becomes relatively effortless and that this is accomplished by feature-based selective attention and that this selective attention demonstrates considerable plasticity.

Furthermore, older adults demonstrate the same development of selective attention, though working memory limitations may set boundaries on their performance.
