Summary: |
Abdominal aortic aneurysm describes the weakening and dilation of the main abdominal artery. The condition affects approximately 5% of males and 0.5% of females aged over 65 years. The principal concern with the problem is sudden aortic rupture, which usually leads to death. The incidence of the problem is increasing highlighting the need for greater investigation of the condition. In this lecture the pathogenesis and present management of aortic aneurysm will be discussed. In particular present deficiencies in these areas will be highlighted and illustrations given of on-going studies to overcome these deficiencies. |
