The Human Rights Regime: the solution or part of the problem?

Date:

Thursday 15 May 2008

Time:

5.30 – 6.45pm

Location:

Central Lecture Theatre (CLT), JCU Douglas Campus, Angus Smith Drive, TOWNSVILLE

Summary:

In this public lecture, Dr Eileen Pittaway will explore the effectiveness of the United Nations in upholding Human Rights in a world that often seems determined to destroy them.

Case studies from Burma, Tibet, Iraq and Bangladesh will be used to highlight refugee issues and the gendered nature of the human rights regime.

Dr Pittaway will also touch lightly on our own Australian record. Importantly, she will discuss the roles that civil society can take in advocating for and upholding human rights through engagement with the UN system, and she will look at some notable successes as well as failures.
