Area of Research Strength – Marine Science
Overview
JCU has made a major commitment to excellence in marine science. This is demonstrated directly through the world-class staff profile of the university, cutting-edge infrastructure, collaborations both nationally and internationally, and substantial external research earnings.
Marine Science is JCU’s largest Area of Research Strength (AoRS) with over 25% of the University’s budget committed to this area. The AoRS has a coordinator and members are from multiple Schools, Centres and Cooperative Research Centres, as well as University Units that are responsible for infrastructure (eg the Marine and Aquaculture Facilities Unit).
In 2003-2004, there were more than 90 staff with PhDs and over 180 postgraduate students within the AoRS, making this one of the largest groups of marine scientists in Australia.
