Objective
To provide opportunities for reasonable general use consistent with the conservation of
the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Use and Entry
Subject to Part Three (Designated Area Provisions) and Part Four (Additional Purposes and
Limitations) of the Central Section Zoning Plan, this clause sets out the only purposes
for which the General Use `A' Zone may be used or entered;
- unless otherwise stated in paragraph (b):
- trolling;
- line fishing using no more than six hooks per line;
- spear fishing subject to the following conditions:
- not for sale or trade
- not with underwater breathing apparatus (other than snorkel)
- not with a power-head
- limited collecting;
- oyster gathering;
- crabbing;
- bait gathering;
- bait netting;
- commercial netting;
- trawling;
- recreational activities that do not involve the taking of plants, animals or
marine products;
- photography and film-making;
- non-manipulative research;
- navigation and operation of vessels, other than hovercraft, provided that any
equipment which is normally used for fishing or collecting is stowed or secured at all
times at which the vessel is in a part of the Zone in which the use of that equipment is
not permitted under this Zoning Plan;
- the operation of aircraft: - at an altitude of not less than 500 feet above
ground or water, or - at an altitude of less than 500 feet when landing at or taking off
from an approved landing area or aerodrome;
- with the written permission of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority or
its delegate:
- (i) manipulative research;
- (ii) collecting (other than limited collecting specified in paragraph (a));
- (iii) line fishing using more than six hooks per line;
- (iv) commercial pole and line tuna fishing, including catching bait by drop
purse seine netting;
- (v) the conduct of a developmental fishery program;
- (vi) traditional fishing and traditional hunting and gathering (other than
fishing or collecting specified in paragraph (a));
- (vii) the farming of marine resources including the operation, construction,
maintenance, demolition or removal of any associated facility;
- (viii) the operation of a tourist or education program including the
construction , operation, maintenance, demolition or removal of any associated facility;
- (ix) the construction or conduct of mooring facilities for vessels;
- (x) the operation of a vessel with provision for more than 8 sleeping berths in
the one vicinity for more than 14 consecutive days or for more than 30 days in any period
of 60 days, including the conduct of operations in or upon, or the maintenance of that
vessel;
- (xi) the operation of a structure including the conduct of operations in or
upon, the discharge of wastes from, or the building, assembling, fixing in position,
maintenance or demolition of that structure;
- (xii) the operation of aircraft other than as specified in paragraph (a);
- (xiv) the navigation and operation of a hovercraft;
- (xv) the dumping of spoil or the carrying out of reclamation works, beach
protection works, harbour works, road building works or any other works;
- (xvi) camping;
- (xvii) programs for the taking of animals or plants which post a threat to
human life or safety, marine or island ecosystems which are part of the Marine Park or the
use and amenity of an area or of adjacent areas;
- (xviii) any purpose not listed in this clause, consistent with the objective of
the Zone.
Objective
To provide for the conservation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park while providing
opportunities for reasonable general-use in areas that are free from trawling and
generally free from shipping.
Use and Entry
Subject to Part Three (Designated Area Provisions) and Part Four (Additional Purposes and
Limitations) this clause sets out the only purposes for which the General Use `B' Zone may
be used or entered:
- unless otherwise stated in paragraph (b):
- trolling;
- line fishing using no more than six hooks per line;
- spear fishing subject to the following conditions:
- not for sale or trade
- not with underwater breathing apparatus (other than snorkel)
- not with a power-head
- limited collecting;

- any purpose not listed in this clause, consistent with the objective of the
Zone.

To provide for the protection of areas of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park while
allowing opportunities for their appreciation and enjoyment by the public, including the
limited removal of natural resources.
Use and Entry
Subject to Part Three (Designated Area Provisions) and Part Four (Additional Purposes and
Limitations) this clause sets out the only purposes for which the Marine National Park `A'
Zone may be used or entered:
- unless otherwise stated in paragraph (b):
- trolling for pelagic species;
- limited line fishing by a person using equipment comprised of either one
hand-held rod or one handline and used with;
- no more than one hook; or
- an artificial fly; or
- a lure;
- limited oyster gathering;
- limited crabbing;
- bait gathering
- bait netting;
- recreational activities that do not involve the taking of plants, animals or
marine products;
- photography and film-making;
- navigation and operation of vessels, other than hovercraft and other than
ships, provided that any equipment which is normally used for fishing or collecting is
stowed or secured at all times at which the vessel is in a part of the Zone in which the
use of the equipment is not permitted under this Zoning Plan;
- the operation of aircraft:
- at an altitude of not less than 500 feet above ground or water; or

Limitations) this clause sets out the only purposes for which the Scientific Research Zone
may be used or entered:
- the operation of aircraft at an altitude of not less than 500 feet above ground
or water;
- with the written permission of the Authority or its delegate;
- research including activities associated with the conduct of research or of a
research station;
- the operation of aircraft other than as specified in paragraph (a);
- programs for the taking of animals or plants which post a threat to human life
or safety, marine or island ecosystems which are part of the Marine Park or the use and
amenity of an area or of adjacent areas;
- any purpose not listed in this clause, consistent with the objective of the
zone.
Objective
To provide for the preservation of areas of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in their
natural state undisturbed by human activity.
Use and Entry
Subject to Part Three (Designated Area Provisions) and Part Four (Additional Purposes and
Limitations) this clause sets out the only purposes for which the Preservation Zone may be
used or entered:
- the operation of aircraft at an altitude of not less than 500 feet above ground
or water;
- with the written permission of the Authority or its delegate:
- scientific research that cannot be carried out in any other Zone;
- any purpose not listed in this clause, consistent with the objective of the
Zone.
