New Bachelor of Business 2008
The JCU School of Business will introduce a new suite of undergraduate business programs in 2008. The changes are part of an update of the existing Bachelor of Business and will allow students to study all of the school’s areas within a single degree. Existing degrees in commerce, economics, tourism and hospitality will all be phased out and will appear as majors in the new Bachelor of Business. This change will ensure that the Bachelor of Business continues to prepare our graduates for contemporary business leadership positions in the national and international markets.
International research shows that business success is closely tied to the ability of business leaders to build effective relationships with employees, colleagues, customers and suppliers. That’s why the Bachelor of Business has a stronger focus than many other business courses on developing people, leadership and negotiation skills. Students will be able to study for a broad-based business degree or a specialised degree with one or two majors. The new Bachelor of Business also allows students to study non-business subjects so that they can explore particular interests, or work towards a particular career goal.
The revised degree structure will allow students to select majors from accounting, economics and regional development, financial management, international business, hospitality management, human resource management, marketing, management and entrepreneurship, and tourism management. The accounting major is fully accredited with professional bodies such as CPA Australia and ICAA.
A range of new subjects will be taught in ‘flexible learning mode’, allowing students to more easily balance the demands of family, work and study. Some subjects will be available in intensive ‘block’ modes, during summer or winter breaks. This gives students the flexibility to spread their academic studies across a full 12 months, or to fast-track their degree.
The development of the new Bachelor of Business has been coordinated by the School’s Undergraduate Studies Panel chaired by Dr. Pierre Benckendorff.
