2009 Indigenous Health Careers Access Program – Physiotherapy

Overview

Description:

The course aims to produce graduates with a strong understanding of the processes and mechanisms underlying in human physical activity with a focus on the role of physical activity in the enhancement of health and well being within a rural/remote/tropical living perspective. Particular areas of interest include the role of exercise in the disease prevention and rehabilitation process and human performance in occupational, educational, sport, exercise and leisure settings.

Duration:

2 years full time and then students transfer in to the standard 2nd year of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.

Workload:

Normal workload expectations are a minimum of 10 hours per week for every subject, including class contact hours, preparation and time spent on assessment tasks.

Career Opportunities

Physiotherapy is a growing profession and in high demand, particularly in rural and remote areas and in Indigenous communities. Physiotherapists can work in a variety of settings including: hospitals, rehabilitation units, community health centres, schools, research, organisational/occupational health units, aged care services, private practice, sports medicine clinics.

Professional Accreditation

JCU’s Bachelor of Physiotherapy will prepare graduates as generalist physiotherapists in accordance with the physiotherapy profession’s scope of practice. The School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences is undergoing accreditation with the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC).
