Commonwealth supported students – Australian* Commonwealth supported students can defer payment of their student contribution amount with a HECS-HELP loan. Repayments are made through the taxation system once a recipient’s income reaches a threshold. The loans are interest-free and GST-free, although CPI indexed annually. The assistance also gives you a 20 per cent discount for any upfront payments of $500 or more made towards your student contribution amount. Further information on HECS-HELP is available from the Commonwealth site Going to Uni or at JCU’s Financial Information pages. To apply for a HECS-HELP loan you must complete a Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form before the census date for your subject/s.
Tuition fee paying students – Australian* students can apply to defer their tuition fees by applying for a FEE-HELP loan. Students repay the loan through the taxation system once their income reaches a threshold. The debt is interest-free and GST-free, but is CPI indexed annually. Further information on FEE-HELP is available from the Commonwealth site Going to Uni or at JCU’s Financial Information pages.
Additionally, students may be entitled to a tax deduction for their tuition fees, including the tuition fees that the Commonwealth pays on their behalf through FEE-HELP assistance. You can call the Tax Office on 13 28 61 for further advice.
