Postgraduate Thesis Writing Group (PTWG)
Cairns
All postgraduate students at James Cook University Cairns Campus are invited to participate in the Postgraduate Thesis Writing Group. In particular, PhD and Research Masters Students at the chapter-writing stage of thesis completion are encouraged to attend these group workshops; however the group will benefit research students at any level and at any stage of writing. The Postgraduate Thesis Writing Group will be held on or near the last Monday of every month. For a timetable please contact the convenor (contact details below).
The workshops provide a collegial network where students can receive feedback on their writing(chapters/articles/short documents) and so can speed the whole writing process. The Postgraduate Thesis Writing Group also provides an opportunity to develop more effective writing strategies, theoretical frameworks, thesis arguments, thesis and chapter planning and structure, interview techniques, methodologies, bibliographical references and other ideas such as how to stay motivated and strategies for completion.
The first hour of every workshop includes a group discussion on one of these themes led by the convenor. In the second hour, the group discusses a chapter/document draft by a student. Effective thesis writing develops from effective reading of others’ works. By becoming more aware of how people read, students are able to improve their own writing.
How to join:
- 1.
Email the convenor: rosemary.dunn@jcu.edu.au
- 2.
Attend the 2 hour workshops once a month (as field work allows).
How to submit a draft:
Email document as an attachment to the convenor 2 weeks prior to the meeting, and outline what sort of feedback is required (eg, proof-reading/flow/ critical arguments?)
The aims of the group will be discussed and developed by the group to respond to its particular needs. Members also gain access to a Learn JCU site with a wide range of resources and discussion groups.
