The Indigenous Health Unit (IHU) at the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences, James Cook University will provide a culturally safe academic environment that supports and values Indigenous leadership and development.

The IHU will be a centre of excellence in workforce development and research to improve Indigenous health in partnership with communities in Queensland.

The IHU in collaboration with communities and key stakeholders will achieve and improve Indigenous Health through research, teaching and student support. It is committed to recruit and increas the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals in our region, through staff support to Indigenous students enrolled in health science courses across the Faculty.

Collaborate issues and views of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander workers in the University

Develop a team of planners for future links to upgrade to status of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander projects/research.

Collaborate with other Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander academics across the University in relationship to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health issues.

About the Indigenous Health Unit

The Indigenous Health Unit of the Faculty of Medicine Health & Molecular Sciences was established in the first half of 2003, under the leadership of Associate Professor Jacinta Elston, Assistant Dean (Indigenous Health).

The Unit provides a focus for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health issues and strategies across the Faculty, including:

  • Improving Indigenous student retention through dedicated support programs and strategies;

  • Recruitment of Indigenous students particularly form NQ communities;

  • Strengthening the capacity of all the Faculty programs to develop and provide, relevant and appropriate Indigenous health curriculum;

  • Raising the profile of health professionals’ degrees and the faculty within local communities;

  • Advocating for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health issues within the Faculty & broader university community;

  • Strengthening Faculty links with local Indigenous communities, and

  • Building the Faculty’s capacity to engage in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander research.
