Selecting Your Subjects

As a Study Abroad student you can enrol in most subjects from any Faculty at JCU (subject to meet pre-requisites and other requirements) – go to Study Areas for more information.

Undergraduate Study Abroad

You are able to study 1st, 2nd and 3rd year subjects dependant on meeting the required pre-requisites for entry.

Postgraduate Study Abroad

If you choose at least one postgraduate 5th year subject, you are required to meet the postgraduate academic entry requirements.You can also choose to study 1st, 2nd and 3rd year subjects under this program dependant on meeting the required pre-requisites for entry, e.g. Biology.

Please Note

  • On your Application, you should list between four to ten subjects and ensure the subjects are available -

    • In the Teaching Period you prefer (Teaching Period 1 (February - June) or Teaching Period 2 (July - November); and

    • On the campus you are applying for.

  • To gain credit for specific subjects at your home university, you will need to liaise with academic advisors to make sure that the subjects you wish to study at JCU will transfer back as official credit.

  • Subjects that are submitted on the JCU Study Abroad application form are sent to JCU academic advisors for approval based on meeting prerequisites. You will be notified of the outcome in your Letter of Offer.

When results are shown, you can click on each subject to see a subject outline and prerequisites.

  • You can tell if a subject is 1st, 2nd and 3rd Level by the first number in the subject code - i.e. MB2050 is a 2nd Level subject. Most Study Abroad students can only study at 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels depending on if prerequisites are met.

Block or Intensive Subjects

Some subjects are available outside the main Study Periods and are offered by block/intensive mode. These are usually available in the mid-year break or before the start of the main study year. Many subjects with longer field-trip components are offered in block mode. Please note there may be additional costs associated with field trips.

Credit Points

Most subjects at JCU have a credit value of 3 credit points. A full-time study load at JCU is 12-credit-points per semester (4 subjects). Enrolments of more than 12 credit points, usually four subjects, in any given teaching period will attract additional pro-rata tuition fees. The minimum allowable enrolment for study abroad students at JCU is 9 -12 credit points in any teaching period (usually 3-4 subjects).

  1. Restricted Entry to Some Subjects

Please note that the subjects below are not available to Study Abroad students:

  • Honours subjects and Postgraduate level (Level 4 and above, except in Law and Engineering).This applies to Undergraduate Study Abroad students only.

  • Some External or Limited mode subjects (US Financial Aid students should check that subject choices will not affect your funding options).

  • Block subjects with inappropriate dates (dates should be checked). If unsure, you may select the subject and we will check if you are able to take it.

  • Any MD, ML, PC, PS, RH, TV subjects.

  • Some subjects are only available to students completing their full degree at JCU or graduate students.
