Internet Accounting
How Internet Traffic is Measured
Users of the Internet can generate traffic by using a Web browser or other applications such as ICQ, RealPlayer, McAfee's Anti-Virus Definition Updates, Telnet etc.Web browser traffic is measured by the JCU Web Proxy Server and traffic generated by all of the other Internet applications is measured by the JCU Internet Firewall. The main function of the Firewall is to act as a security device for the JCU network, but it also has an accounting role for all non-Web Browser traffic.
- Web Browser Traffic
- Internet Traffic Other Than Web Browser Traffic
- Using the Web Browser FTP Feature to Transfer Files
Is some program use or service charged?
Any 'is it charged' question may be simply answered by answering the following question'is the information coming down the University's Internet Link'?
An example is an external (free or paid) email account being read on a PC on campus:
If you don't have a modem and can read your email anyway then you are using the University's link and therefore you will be charged for this usage.
If you do have a modem and can only read your mail whilst it is connected to your ISP, then you are not using the University's Internet link and hence we will not charge you. Of course, Telstra will charge you for the call and the ISP will charge you for the connect time or bytes used (however they normally charge you).
