Biography

After completing her articles and her admission as a solicitor in 1992, Kate practised as a solicitor between 1992 and 2004 in private practice in both Brisbane and Cairns, in property and commercial law. Her primary areas of practice included commercial and retail leasing, commercial conveyancing and stamp duties. She acted for clients in major development projects including early multi-use developments in South East Queensland, and one of the first layered subdivisions under the Body Corporate and Community Management Act. Kate was also responsible for her firm’s knowledge management including development of precedent systems, research, client and staff seminars on topical legal issues and junior professional staff training and mentoring. After leaving private practice, Kate practised for two years in a native title representative body.

Since arriving in Cairns in 1992, Kate has been involved in community legal centres and other community-based organisations. She was part of the steering committee which secured funding to establish the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service in 1995-96. She was a member of the Queensland Legal Educators Conference Working Group for 2009.

Kate has taught at JCU as lecturer and tutor since early 2004 in land law, contract law, ethics, legal institutions and processes, law society and change, legal research, writing and analysis and international law. She is a regular contributor to Uniprep, Freshstart and law related O-Week sessions for students.
