Biography

Professor Stephen Graw joined James Cook University from legal practice in 1979 after teaching part-time in 1978. He was initially located in the then Department of Commerce (now part of the School of Business) where he taught Contract, Commercial, Company, Industrial and Taxation Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He was Head of the then Department of Accounting and Finance from 1994 to 1997 and was then appointed Acting Head of what is now the School of Business from 1997 to 1998. In 1999 he moved to the School of Law as Acting Head of School (1999-2000) and became Head of School in July 2002, completing his term at the end of 2005.

For much of that time (1978-1993) he was the External Course Co-ordinator (Townsville) for the QUT External LLB Program – in which capacity he also conducted classes in Contract, Commercial, Company, Constitutional and Taxation Law.

Outside the School he chairs the Council of the recently amalgamated Combined Catholic Colleges of St Raphael and St Paul, is a director of the Townsville Port Authority, a member of the SSAU Consultative Committee, a Patron of two community organisations and the co-ordinator of the Company Directors Courses offered in North Queensland in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also actively involved with the Taxation Institute of Australia – particularly in North Queensland.

His current teaching responsibility includes Taxation and Advanced Taxation Law as well as Business and Taxation Law units in the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Professional Accounting and a Master of International Professional Accounting program taught conjointly with Guangzhou University in China.
