Biography
Sam is Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at James Cook University and the Director of the Conflict Resolution Programs, Adjunct Associate Professor at Bond University and Affiliate Scholar at the Center for the Study of Narrative and Conflict Resolution within the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. She is also the Research and Development Coordinator of the youth Peace Revolution Program, Thailand.
Since 1997 Sam has taught law, conflict management and conflict resolution to university students, lawyers and a wide range of people from private and public organisations.
She also has a consultancy practice in creative conflict engagement and education, and is a Principal of Conflict Coaching International.
Sam is a Nationally Accredited Mediator under the Australian Standards and a Certified Transformative Mediator by the US Institute of Conflict Transformation. She completed advanced negotiation training at Harvard Law School.She is an experienced conflict coach and the founder of the REAL Conflict Coaching System.
Sam has a range of postgraduate qualifications in law, conflict resolution and teaching.Her PhD thesis examined the impact of different methods of dispute resolution on the narratives of personal injury litigants, and explored the concept of narrative genre as a tool for analyzing and resolving conflict. Her Masters of Laws primarily focused on Trade Practices Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution. She also has a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts (double major in French). In 2010 Sam was awarded a Rotary Peace Fellowship to attend a 3-month intensive professional development program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.
Sam has a particular interest in education and training and has been recognised as a leader in this field. She received a University Teaching Excellence Award in 2003, and a National Carrick Citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2006. In2006 she was also appointed a Fellow of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australia.
In 2011 Sam established the Student Conflict Support Service, a clinical program for students in the Masters of Conflict and Dispute Resolution at James Cook University.The service provides free conflict support for undergraduate students at JCU, and practical experience for Masters students, who are supervised and mentored by experience practitioners.
Sam has published widely in conflict resolution, including her books Dispute Resolution in Australia 2nd Ed. (2009) co-authored with David Spencer, and Mediation for Lawyers (2010) co-authored with Olivia Rundle.
