Bachelor of Applied Science (Aquaculture)
Overview
The Bachelor of Applied Science is a four year degree that incorporates scientific and business training to prepare students for a career in on or tropical Australia’s fastest growing industries. Students have hands on experience cultivating everything from prawns to barramundi, with an emphasis on tropical species. Our courses in aquaculture have an emphasis on field work and practical skills and getting students out of the classroom.
JCU coordinates an international project on cultured pearl oysters in the South Pacific Islands, funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. Other research projects are funded by the Australian Research Council, Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and by industry directly. Links with peak research bodies means students and teaching staff gain valuable practical and research experience. Additionally, links with commercial aquaculture operations ensure our courses keep up to date with industry requirements. Bachelor of Applied Science students undertake an aquaculture farm placement during their fourth year.
The fourth year of the Bachelor of Applied Science (24 academic units) has two options Pass and Honours programs, both include some independent research work. The coursework will normally include subjects that expand the student's abilities in the area of their project activities. The nature of the research may be restricted by the availability of an appropriate supervisor, funding, and facilities for carrying out the proposed project. (See structure below for subject choices)
