Bachelor of Marine Science

Overview

Description:

The Bachelor of Marine Science is a multi-disciplinary degree and provides students with two pathways. Each of the pathways provides students with breadth in the discipline as well as flexibility to follow their own interests. Emphasis is given to scientific breadth in life and physical marine sciences, and to generic skills that enable the student to respond to changes in the job market for marine science worldwide. The degree requires coursework in a range of disciplines across two faculties: Marine Biology (School of Marine and Tropical Biology), Earth and Environmental Sciences (School of Earth and Environmental Sciences), Mathematics (School of Mathematics, Physics and Information Technology) and Chemistry (School of Molecular Biology). This program is designed for students who enjoy interdisciplinary science and want to package subjects to achieve particular skills outcomes.

Honours

An Honours program is available for those students who demonstrate high academic performance. Honours consists of an extra year of study and the development of a personal research project and thesis. An Honours degree is usually essential for entry to research higher degrees. JCU's Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology also offers a wide range of postgraduate study opportunities and has an active research program.

Career Opportunities

The program equips students with the management skills for a career in a range of business settings. By selecting appropriate elective courses and majors, students can direct their studies towards individual career pathways. Please browse our discipline areas for more detailed career pathways.
