Biofouling is the growth of plants and animals on an underwater surface and is a major cost factor for all aquaculture industries through increased costs and decreased productivity. The control of biofouling is a major goal for all aquaculture industries and focuses on an understanding of the processes that determine settlement of algal propagules and invertebrate larvae. In addition to developing novel antifouling technologies this research provides opportunities for improving larval settlement and survival, a key process in invertebrate aquaculture.
