Overview
The world needs tropical agricultural scientists like never before: only through applying sound science is it possible to develop the sustainable practices that we need in order to face increasing world food demand and climate change, while protecting our remaining natural areas. JCU’s programs and research in agricultural science are strongly oriented towards supporting and developing the multifunctional tropical agriculture needed to respond to these opportunities and challenges. They encompass both innovative land-based approaches, such as agroforestry and novel crop development, and the dynamic and expanding field of aquaculture. JCU’s strategic locations in Cairns and Townsville, close to important agricultural areas, World Heritage Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, make it the ideal place to study and research the science behind tropical agriculture.

Career Opportunities
Australia, in common with many other countries, is facing a shortage of trained agricultural scientists, resulting in excellent career opportunities. Agricultural scientists are employed by federal, state and local governments, research organisations, educational establishments and consulting companies, among others. Careers tend to be based close to population centres rather than necessarily in remote locations. The range of applications of agricultural science is broad, and this is reflected in the diversity of job opportunities, which include areas such as the following:
-
Natural resource management
-
Biotechnology
-
Education
-
New crops and cultivars
-
Certification agencies (organic, fair-trade, sustainable, etc.)
-
Agricultural, horticultural and agroforestry research in general
-
Overseas rural development
-
Journalism and media
-
Biosecurity (pests, diseases, control of invasives)
-
Protected area and conservation buffer-zone management.
