Research Interests
-
Population genetics and phylogeography of reef fish
-
Phylogeny and biogeography of reef fish
-
Identification of hybridization in reef fish species/variants
Recent and Current Projects Include
My research focuses on understanding speciation in reef fishes. We approach this question by investigating
- A)
Molecular Phylogenetics: To understand phylogenetic relationships between species that are members of large groups, such as parrotfishes and angelfishes or species that are possibly in the process of speciation ( Acanthachromis polyacanthus colour morphs).
- B)
Population genetics: We are generally interested in understanding how larval dispersal abilities and other life history features affect speciation (or the inhibition thereof). Our focus is on tropical species of the Indo-West Pacific.
Areas of research which I have recently been involved in are: Development of microsatellite markers for a range of species, including Lethrinus miniatus and Plectropomus laevis ; Population structure survey of L. miniatus across its range along the Great Barrier Reef and Testing utility of microsatellite markers in other commercially important reef fish species; hybridisation in Acanthochromis polyacanthus and in coral trout on the GBR; Evolution and biogeography of angelfishes; Sympatric speciation by host shift in the sea.
