Research Interests

  • Biology of Tropical Decapod Crustaceans

  • Brachyuran Phylogeny and Systematics

  • Invertebrate Functional Morphology

Recent and Current Projects Include

My research interests have a strong bias towards the Phylum Crustacea, focussing on their functional biology and phylogenetic systematics. My current research is on the phylogeny, biogeography and functional morphology of a tropical brachyuran family, the Calappidae, with emphasis on the use of the cladistic method in resolving the taxonomic status of the family.

Recent and Currently Supervised Projects

I am also currently supervising honours projects on the functional basis of swimming in tropical brachyurans and feeding structures of scavenging isopods. My previous research and publications generally reflect the aspects of crustacean biology which I am interested in, namely, the growth, reproduction and feeding of tropical decapods. I am particularly interested in supervising honours projects which address questions in these areas in a phylogenetic and functional framework.
