Research Interests

My interests are in evolution in general, especially evolutionary genetics, and most especially that of social groups. Within this framework, I have interests in the theory of the evolution of social behavior [especially in social insects], the molecular ecology of social insects populations, and the molecular phylogeny of social insects. Other organisms I have studied include fishes, birds, octopods, midges, humans and bryozoa. I have also worked on the assessment of conservation priorities using phylogeny.

Recent and Current Research Projects Include

Current major projects include the evolution of social insect immune genes in relation to sociality and habitat, which includes studies on the social structure of colonies. Recent and currently supervised projects include aspects of the major project work, the molecular genetics of reef fishes, gene expression changes in reef fishes in relation to temperature, the conservation genetics of Gouldian finches, evolutionary immunology of rainforest birds, molecular phylogeny of Camponotus ants, evolutionary genetics of figs and fig-wasps, and the use of systematics as a surrogate for phylogeny in conservation assessment.
