Advanced Analytical Centre (AAC)

The Advanced Analytical Centre (referred to as the AAC) is a central facility within James Cook University. It provides instrumental analysis to the university and analytical and consulting services to external customers. The AAC is the applications laboratory for Varian in Northern Australia for ICP.

  • X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF)

  • Single Crystal Diffractometer (XRD)

  • Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM)

  • Electron Microprobe (EPMA)

  • Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)

  • Laser Confocal Microscope

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS)

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES)

  • Laser Ablation ICP-Mass Spectroscopy

  • Genetic analysis equipment

  • Optical Microscopes

Sample preparation equipment includes

  • Bench Top Ring Mills - for reducing samples to a powder.

  • Critical Point Dryer - for dehydrating samples for SEM.

  • Sputter Coater - for precious metal coating of samples for SEM

  • Evaporative Coater - for carbon coating samples for SEM and EPMA.

  • Microwave digestion - for acid digestion.

  • Trace elemental analysis of marine and fresh waters

  • Analysis of trace & major elements in process ores & geological materials

  • Phase characterisation of process and geological materials

  • Elemental analysis of other materials

  • Semi-quantitative elemental analysis

  • Biological & material investigations using electron microscopy

  • Micro elemental analysis using the electron probe

  • Genetic analysis

  • Service, repair and design of electronic equipment.

  • Service and repair of optical microscopes
