Aquarium Complex
Marine & Aquaculture Research Facilities Unit (MARFU)
The Aquarium Complex is operated by Marine & Aquaculture Research Facilities Unit (MARFU) at our Douglas campus and comprises of several large re-circulated seawater aquarium systems.
Over 600,000 litres of seawater is continuously circulating through biological filters and algal scrubbers to help maintain the exceptional quality. There are three separate Aquarium compounds, which support the 23 research laboratories with temperature and light control.
This allows the Researchers to rear and maintain oysters, mudcrabs, corals, reef fishes and freshwater fishes under the controlled environment. Several large outside covered areas are available depending on requirements.
Previous research projects have already demonstrated that the system will permit successful rearing of reef fishes through egg, larval and settlement stages.
