This program focuses on the biological assemblages of mangrove, intertidal and estuarine habitats. Coastal and estuarine environments represent areas where terrestrial freshwater and marine habitats meet and are subject to extremes of temperature and salinity and the provision of food supply. They provide a natural laboratory for studies of the response of tropical marine organisms to environmental stress. The program covers both fishes and invertebrates.
On-going Research Programs:
-
Fish recruitment into tropical estuaries: Dr Marcus Sheaves (Staff).
-
Reproductive biology of estuarine fishes: Dr Marcus Sheaves (Staff).
-
The invertebrate assemblages of rocky and sandy tropical shores: Dr John Collins (Staff).
-
Larval and juvenile fauna in mangroves and estuaries: R. Johnston (PhD student).
