On-going Research Programs:

We are studying the effects of a variety of human-mediated disturbances on populations of amphibians and reptiles, in an attempt to elucidate the mechanisms driving these responses. For example, some of our research suggests that reptiles are sensitive to manipulations of environmental structure, whereas amphibians are more sensitive to environmental variables like humidity.

  • Effects of anthropogenic disturbance on reptiles and amphibians (presently examining the influences of weeds, weed removal, forestry, invasive animals and power lines on reptiles and amphibians) Dr Lin Schwarzkopf(Staff).

Reptile skin is covered in remarkable and complex microstructures, that promote functions such as water transport and hydrophobicity. We are describing microstructures and determining their functions.

  • Ecological significance and evolution of skin structures of reptiles Dr Lin Schwarzkopf(Staff).

Top predators are disappearing from fragmented and disturbed ecosystems. Using reptile assemblages, are studying the influence of the experimental removal of top predators on the behaviour and abundance of mesopredators.
