Abstract:

We adopted a multidisciplinary approach to better understand the environmental impacts of seacage aquaculture in tropical environments using study sites in Indonesia and Northern Australia. We combined hydrodynamic studies with measurements of major ecosystem processes to estimate environmental assimilative capacity for waste nutrients originating from seacages and to map the environmental footprint of farms. Several novel approaches show promise for better measuring the environmental footprint of farms, including the use of Zn:Li ratios in the sediments and the use of blast sequencing to identify differences in microbial communities. In addition, a Decision Support Tool for Indonesian seacage managers (CADS_TOOL – developed by Dr Halmar Halide) is now available. These studies contribute scientific data and planning tools toward responsible management of aquaculture development in tropical environments.
