Associate Professor

David Blair

BSc University of Glasgow

PhD, University of Glasgow

Member of the: Australian Society for Parasitology, American Society of Parasitologists, Genetics Society of Australia.

Research Interests

  • Evolution and phylogeny of Australian fauna

  • Population and conservation genetics of mammals and reptiles in Australia

  • Phylogeny and classification of parasitic flatworms using molecular methods

  • Mitochondrial genomics

  • Flatworm parasites of wildlife in Australia

  • Molecular markers for invasive species

My research has been influenced by two biological disciplines: parasitology and genetics. My PhD studies were on the life-cycles and biology of the parasites of farmed fish. This led me into the systematics of parasitic flatworms, a field which still fascinates me. I realised long ago that molecular techniques – especially the use of DNA sequences - had enormous potential for resolving problems in systematics. I applied these methods initially to parasitic flatworms, but later extended their use to questions relating to population genetics and phylogeography of vertebrates. Another parallel strand has been molecular taxonomy of medically-important parasites, such as Asian lungflukes and bloodflukes, and the development of probes for the identification of invasive marine species.

Recent and Current Projects Include

  • History of the association between Australian freshwater crayfish and their temnocephalan flatworm associates.

  • Molecular taxonomy and evolution of lungflukes of the genus Paragonimus.

  • Molecular systematics and evolution of freshwater planarians in Australia

  • Structure of the mitochondrial genomes of parasitic flatworms

  • Population genetics and phylogeography of the dugong

  • Molecular ecology of platypus in north Queensland

  • Development of molecular markers for the identification of marine invasive species.

  • Tracing the movements and population biology of a vulnerable species of flying-fox.
