Biology and Diversity of Tropical Marine Invertebrates
Dr Gilianne Brodie is an invertebrate biologist currently working primarily on the taxonomy, phylogeny and functional biology of opisthobranch molluscs. She also has a keen interest in the classification, diversity and biology of marine invertebrates found in tropical coastal ecosystems including fringing reefs, rocky shores, mangroves, mudflats and seagrass habitats. Gilianne is passionate about improving our knowledge, understanding and appreciation of tropical intertidal and shallow water habitats, and the largely undocumented diversity of marine invertebrates found there.
Dr Gilianne Brodie has been successful in obtaining external funding from Environment Australia via the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS - $19,900) and the Commonwealth Government Envirofund (Natural Heritage Trust - $15,400). She was also recently awarded an internal Teaching Relief Award ($10,300) from the JCU Research Office.
Recent and Current Projects Include
-
Taxonomy and phylogeny of doridoidean nudibranchs (Mollusca: Nudibranchia, Dorididae), with a focus on cryptic species from Australian coastal habitats (in collaboration with Dr Heike Wägele, Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany).
-
Management of Coastal Marine Invertebrate Biodiversity at Rowes Bay

Teaching
Dr Brodie has been teaching tropical marine invertebrate biology for over 10 years. She specialises in molluscan biology and systematics and currently supervises two PhD and one MSc research student. In 1997 Dr Brodie led a team from JCU Department of Marine Biology that was short-listed for a Prime Minister’s Award for Institutional Services to International Students. She has worked previously on a UNESCO Marine Curricula Series for western Pacific secondary schools and is currently very interested in supporting marine education programs in the Torres Strait in cooperation with CRC Torres Strait and IOI- Australia.
