Overview

Genetics is a long-established scientific discipline devoted to the study of genes and inheritance. It is central to all areas of biology and life sciences. Genomics is a comparatively new field born out of the technological advances of the Human Genome Project. By majoring in Genetics and Genomics, students get the opportunity to understand the most fundamental of life's processes at the molecular level, and learn how to utilise this knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

You will not only learn the fundamental principles of genetics and their applications, but also the latest genomic technologies, including advanced molecular biology and biochemical methods, robotic automation, as well as computer-based data analysis and information processing (bioinformatics). You will also learn how these approaches have revolutionized our ability to analyze and interpret complex biological systems.

We use a multidisciplinary approach to the teaching of Genetics and Genomics. Teaching staff are drawn from a wide range of specialities and research backgrounds. Students gain familiarity with a variety of biological systems and problems, ranging from the complex genetics of autoimmunity to the challenges of conservation genetics of endangered species. At the completion of this course, you will have a sound scientific knowledge encompassing a broad spectrum of genetic systems, and an understanding of the latest research methods applicable to a range of modern career opportunities.
