INTRODUCTION
Welcome to James Cook University (JCU), which is one of the fastest growing Universities in Australia. In recent years there has been a steady growth in student numbers. This growth is led by the fact that we are a research university - arguably the best regional research university in the country.
As a research university, JCU is able to offer excellent facilities across all its teaching areas with strong links with industry and other research institutions, nationally and overseas.
The University has a number of specialist facilities including the Advanced Analytical Centre, the Cyclone Structural Testing Station and the Research Vessel James Kirby. JCU is also a partner in six Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) comprising the CRC for Ecologically Sustainable Development of the Great Barrier Reef, the CRC for Aquaculture, the CRC for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management, the CRC for Sustainable Sugar Production, the CRC for Sustainable Tourism and the CRC for Sustainable Development of Tropical Savannas.
JCU is a place where innovation and new ideas are encouraged. Nearly 60% of JCU teaching staff have PhDs (compared with the national average of 50%), and a number of JCU academics are considered to be world leaders in their field. Supporting academic activities are specialist administrative and general staff. Many of these support staff are located within the Faculties and Schools and so become intimately involved in the day to day business of the University.
The benefits to staff of working at JCU are numerous and include:- salary packaging options, flexible working hours, comprehensive superannuation, paid maternity/paternity leave, on-campus parking, support for further study and generous annual leave provisions.
JCU also has exciting plans for the future. Campuses will continue to grow - further construction is already under way on the Cairns campus, while the establishment of the medical school has been a significant development for the whole University.
The University has clearly defined its mission, goals and strategies for the future which are outlined in the document:- "James Cook University: Into the Third Millennium, our future and how we get there".
MissionJames Cook University will serve tropical Queensland and the nation by providing education and research of international standing in a broad range of fundamental and professional disciplines, and world leadership in subjects of special importance to the tropics and to the region. |
JCU OBJECTIVES
The University's primary objectives for 1998 - 2010 are characterised by:-
- a global perspectiveand sense of the national and international significance of our region;
- the choice of international reference scales;
- a clear sense of our regional responsibility and focus; and
- a desire to promote a sense of local ownership of the University on the part of the people of tropical Queensland.
JCU PRIORITIES
The University has set itself a number of priorities which will assist in taking us into the future:
- To consolidate our position as a university of international standing, committed to excellence and with a clear regional focus.
- To increase the number of people in our region who receive university education.
- To engage with our region so that the University is an integral and inseparable element of northern Queensland.
- To fully develop the potential of the Cairns and Townsville campuses and to foster the campuses in both Mackay and Mt Isa.
- To foster an organisational environment which supports and values the work of all members of the University community.
- To diversify the sources and expand the scale of the University's income, and strategically manage expenditure, to increase our independent ability to pursue our priorities.
HISTORY OF JCU
James Cook University was established by an Act of the Parliament of Queensland in April 1970. That was replaced by a new Act passed in 1997 which came into effect on 1 January 1998. On that date the name changed from the James Cook University of North Queensland to simply James Cook University.
James Cook University (JCU) was formerly the University College of Townsville, and enrolled its first students in 1961. The Premier of Queensland, the Honourable G.F.R. Nicklin, officially opened the University College of Townsville, on 27 February 1961.
In the mid-1960's construction commenced on the 365 hectare permanent campus of the University at Douglas, where the first buildings were occupied in 1967. By 1972, the Administration, the Computer Centre, the Library, and twelve academic departments had been transferred from the original Pimlico campus to Douglas. The remaining departments moved to Douglas between 1975 and 1980.
In April 1981 the Commonwealth Government decided on "a major rationalisation and reallocation of resources in higher education", involving consolidation of 30 existing Colleges of Advanced Education into larger units. This led to the amalgamation of the Townsville College of Advanced Education with JCU, which took effect on 1 January 1982.
The period since 1982 has seen continued growth, with new programs in biomedical sciences, chemical sciences, computer science, tourism, engineering technology, information technology, law, nursing, music and fine arts. A strong commitment to research has led to initiatives in applied science and engineering and numerous aspects of life in the tropics including tropical freshwater, health and medicine, tropical architecture, rainforests, travel and tourism, journalism, remote sensing, marine science and technology.
In 1987, the University began teaching first-year courses in Cairns, and second and third-year subjects in selected courses have subsequently been added. Facilities in Cairns were shared with the Cairns College of Technical and Further Education until July 1995 when the new 50 hectare Smithfield Campus was opened.
